Why was the Freedom Heritage Museum started?
The idea and purpose of the museum began years ago and over time gathered momentum.
- Never before or since has a community pulled together, endured rationing, made so many personal sacrifices, combined ingenuity and manufacturing prowess to become the most productive war materials city per capita, and impacted American and world history as Evansville, Indiana did during World War II. But, all this was quickly forgotten.
- When talking to Evansville’s Greatest Generation, i.e. the Rosie the Riveters and WWII veterans, one recognizes what they did and how they did it was extraordinary. However, they will tell you “we just did what we had to” and “it was our job.” But, what they did was beyond remarkable, it was amazing!
- We need to inspire the younger generations of today to follow in the footsteps of (not just remember) their grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, neighbors of what they did for our community, our nation, and our world in protecting our freedoms. It is our turn to carry on the legacy that the Greatest Generation gave us.
For these reasons, the Freedom Heritage Museum was established to Discover, Learn, Remember, and Honor our home town heroes that changed the world and protected our freedoms.
Come join us, the Freedom Heritage Museum, to celebrate what Evansville and the Greatest Generation did for us and our future!
